Safety Committee

The Safety Committee, working closely with the Skipper's Advisory and Cruising Committees, keeps the focus on the safety of boats and crew. Skippers create a "Boat Information" statement that confirms the presence of basic amenities, safety equipment, and proper insurance.

The Safety Committee reviews the boat information, talks with new Skippers, follows up on any concerns crew or other Skippers may have, and, generally, promotes the safe sailing season.

The SOS Safety Committee:

  • Addresses safety-related issues that arise and coordinates appropriate responses with associated committee chairs.  Safety incidents are reported to the Safety Committee on the Safety Incident Report form.
  • Receives and evaluates requests for reimbursement for damages to sailboats sustained during club sailing activities and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors.
  • Receives Annual Boat Information Forms from skippers and activates sailboats for sailing with SOS.  Safety activates boats for daysails or for weekend sailing depending upon information on the form.
  • Maintains the club boats database with data from the Annual Boat Information Forms.  This database identifies SOS boats activated for day sails and weekend sails.
  • Maintains a list of First Mate Candidates.
  • Notifies membership of new recognized First Mates.
  • Coordinates the spring Flare and Safety Demonstration event.
  • Runs the flare exchange program for active SOS skippers.
